The F. Paul Pacult's Spirit Journal 100+10:
The 110 Best Distilled Spirits Currently Available in 2005!

In the June issue each year I always choose my favorite century of distilled spirits that are available in the marketplace now. While they are numbered from 1 through 100, please know that EACH ONE IS A FIVE-STAR PRODUCT and, therefore, is considered a benchmark for its specific category. Since there are currently over 10,000 spirits available worldwide, ending up on a short list of 100 top-shelf spirits is no small feat.

Because the number of five-star products keeps growing, we have expanded the roster this year to make certain that deserving products get cited, even if they didn't make this year's final cut. To accommodate the increase in sterling five-star products, next year we will expand the Spirit Journal list to 125.

New subscribers should likewise be aware that I employ no system for selecting these hallowed distillates other than my own continuing enjoyment of them. The Spirit Journal 100+10 is admittedly a personal indulgence and is the least scientifically arrived at or formatted compilation that the FPPSJ sponsors all year. Admiration of distilling excellence is the prime motivation; not measured analysis. The Spirit Journal 100+10 is my own very personal roster of spirits that we at the SJ love imbibing because they represent what at the highest level is so pleasurable about drinking spirits.

All that's left to say is: Down the hatch, slainte, cheers, and bottoms up.

The Elite Top 20

1.) HIGHLAND PARK 18-Year-Old Orkney Single Malt Whisky (Scotland); 43% abv, $79.
Each year that I've cited the Spirit Journal 100, this Whisky of Whiskies has landed in the top stratum. It's time just to call HP18 the best whisky in the world and be done with it for one irrefutable reason: OUT OF THE HUNDREDS OF WHISKIES FROM SCOTLAND, CANADA, THE U.S., JAPAN, INDIA, AND IRELAND, HIGHLAND PARK 18 IS THE FINEST OF THEM ALL AND RIGHT NOW MY FAVORITE DISTILLED SPIRIT. There, I've finally said it.

2.) COEUR DE LION 1963 Calvados Pays d'Auge (France); 42% abv, $310.
A bona fide masterpiece of apple mash distilling that will live long in my memory as one of the greatest spirits/brandy experiences I've ever had.

3.) A. HARDY Noces de Diamant 60-Year-Old Grande Champagne Cognac (France); 40% abv, $500.
This gem fulfills every cognac expectation that one could have. A veritable clinic on grape distilling from France's most fabled and distinguished Appellation Controlee distillation district.

4.) ARDBEG Uigeadail Islay Single Malt Whisky/Cask Strength (Scotland); 54.2% abv, $75.
Without any doubt whatsoever, the single sexiest, most alluring Islay malt in the marketplace at present. Just grateful that I still have two bottles of it stored safely away in an undisclosed location.

5.) EVAN WILLIAMS Vintage 1995 Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey (USA); 43.3% abv, $25.
The annual SJ 100 shoe-in from Kentucky distilling geniuses Parker and Craig Beam. I can't think of another whiskey that for the price delivers as much power, depth, and elegance per ounce than this sterling bourbon from Heaven Hill Distilleries of Bardstown, KY. State of the art.

6.) CHATEAU DE LAUBADE Vintage 1941 Bas Armagnac (France); 40% abv, $460.
As seductive as brandy gets. An explosive display of high wattage power and alluring finesse, wrapped in a 60+ year old package. It still thrills me to the bone.

7.) XELLENT Swiss Vodka (Switzerland); 40% abv, $34.
The new super-premium/ultra-premium vodka to be viewed as the benchmark…for this year anyway. Lithe, velvety, succulent, and luscious only begin to tell the real tale of this gold standard unflavored vodka.

8.) PAPPY VAN WINKLE'S Family Reserve 15-Year-Old Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey (USA); 53.5% abv, $45.
Through the Spirit Journal Retaste Program I elevated the rating on this sensational whiskey from four to five stars this past March. Since that time, it has garnered other honors as a top-notch American whiskey. Is this milestone whiskey Julian Van Winkle's pinnacle achievement?

9.) BOWMORE Darkest Sherry Casked Islay Single Malt Whisky (Scotland); 43% abv, $65.
What I wrote last year stands today, "For those of you who remember Scotch's Holiest of Holies, Black Bowmore 1964, give this Baby Black a whirl. Brings back memories of unbridled bliss." Tasted again recently at a public event and was suitably stunned by its brilliance.

10.) THE MACALLAN Fine Oak 15-Year-Old Speyside Single Malt Whisky (Scotland); 43% abv, $65.
It took tremendous courage to tinker with the established Macallan taste profile. All I can say is that it worked incredibly well. THIS IS SUPERIOR WHISKY MAKING AT ITS DEFINING AND EXHILARATING BEST. Shame on all the stodgy, shortsighted naysayers. Grow up already.

11.) SANTA TERESA 1796 Ron Antiguo de Solera Rum (Venezuela); 40% abv, $35.
Rum's crème de le crème, period. Taste it and if you don't agree, have your taste buds checked for life signs.

12.) CRAGGANMORE Rare Edition 10-Year-Old Sherry Cask Natural Cask Strength Speyside Single Malt Whisky (Scotland); 60.1% abv, $150.
I've always loved the malts from Diageo's esteemed Cragganmore Distillery, but this elegant, richly textured classic tops them all. WOW!

13) GRAND MARNIER Cuvée Spéciale Cent Cinquantenaire Liqueur (France); 40% abv, $215.
Liqueurs don't get any better or classier. The ultimate liqueur experience.

14.) LYSHOLM LINIE Aquavit (Norway); 41.5% abv, $25.
A superbly satisfying and adaptable grain spirit that will, in the end, be recognized as one of the greatest grain distillates produced in the modern era.

15.) BLACK MAPLE HILL 21-Year-Old/Cask #7 Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey (USA); 47.5% abv, $108.
One of the most luxurious and decadent bourbons I've ever evaluated. A tour-de-force that belongs in any and every serious whiskey collection. Fathomless.

16. THE GLENLIVET 1964 Cellar Collection Speyside Single Malt Whisky (Scotland) 44.8% abv, $2,000.
Miles different from the ethereal, floral/fruity Glenlivet style that we've all come to know well and admire. This is profoundly deep, multilayered, and walnuty Speyside single malt heaven.

17.) MARQUIS DE MONTESQUIOU 1971 Bas Armagnac (France); 44.9% abv, $100.
So luscious that it should be outlawed. A brandy siren and a textbook example of how remarkably well armagnac can mature without losing its identity or vivid personality to the cask. Love it.

18.) BOWMORE 25-Year-Old Islay Single Malt Whisky (Scotland); 43% abv, $180.
Included because it continues to exist. A monument to Islay whisky distilling that stands with the finest ever made.

19.) TANQUERAY Special Dry English Gin (England); 47.3% abv, $22.
Again won a Double Gold/Best Gin at the SF World Spirits Competition this past March. There's only one way to view this legend: As Gin's ultimate roadmap.

20.) GERMAIN-ROBIN Anno Domini 2005 Alambic Brandy (USA); 40% abv, $350.
A little bit of Mendocino County, CA heaven, courtesy of the finest brandy distiller in the U.S., Hubert Germain-Robin. I can't ignore Ansley Coale, Jr., Hubert's partner, for his tireless beating of the drums. Right up there with more than a few XO-level cognacs.

21.) BARBANCOURT ESTATE Réserve 15 Year Old Rhum (Haiti); 43% abv, $30.
Not just a great rum, but a world-class distillate of the top rank. One that will always be in the Spirit Journal 100.

22.) PLYMOUTH Dry Gin (England); 41.2% abv, $30.
The quality is such that it deserves to always be in the SJ Top 50, at least. Along with Tanqueray Special Dry, Zuidam, Van Gogh, and Tanqueray No. Ten, the gin that makes the category the best in white spirits.

23.) CHABOT ARMAGNAC Vintage 1944 (France); 40% abv, $870.
I acknowledge that any spirit costing this much had better be spectacular. The reality is, many spirits costing $500 or more per bottle are not worth it. This subtle, profound beauty is worth every cent. FANTASTIC.

24.) LAPHROAIG 30-Year-Old Islay Single Malt Whisky (Scotland); 43% abv, $225.
What I said last year stands, "The quintessential LaFroggie, huge, biscuity, pipe smoke sweet, yet stunningly elegant and fine."

25.) DANIEL BOUJU Royal Brut de Fut Grande Champagne Cognac (France); 60% abv, $65.
A stunning luscious, big-hearted cognac that never once is off-balance, even with the lofty abv. Truly magnificent.

26.) THE BALVENIE "Thirty" 30-Year-Old Speyside Single Malt Whisky (Scotland) 47.3% abv, $499.
Without any doubt, my all-time favorite expression from this classy Speyside distillery. Defines the sweeter/vanilla bean side of Speyside to a tee.

27.) BUSHMILLS Irish Cream Liqueur (Ireland); 17% abv, $19.
Rarely do products come along that redefine their category. Bushmills has set the bar at the highest rung for cream liqueurs. THE BEST CREAM LIQUEUR OF ANY TYPE IN THE WORLD BY A LONG WAY.

28.) NONINO Cru Grappa di Monovitigno Picolit, Colli Orientali del Friuli (Italy); 50% abv, $156.
Currently, my favorite grappa and one of my ten favorite brandies. Superb distilling by a unique family whose dedication to excellence is inspirational.

29.) ZUIDAM Dry Gin (Holland) 44.5% abv, $30.
A new kid on the Gin block that runs with the legends of the category without losing a step. Find and try. Cutting edge and racy.

30.) INNER CIRCLE Green Spot Rum (Australia); 57.2% abv, $24.
Deserves every accolade, every award that it's received. A SPECTACULAR RUM THAT ISN'T AFRAID TO PUSH THE LIMITS.

31.) WOKKA SAKI Vodka with Sake Added (United Kingdom); 40% abv, $40.
Who'd have thought that a sake-flavored vodka could be so absolutely scrumptious? Amazingly savory, from top to bottom.

32.) SPRINGBANK 32-Year-Old Campbeltown Single Malt Whisky (Scotland); 46% abv, $750.
SPRINGBANK…that's all one needs to know.

33.) HIGHLAND PARK 25-Year-Old Orkney Single Malt Whisky (Scotland); 43% abv, $185.
The ideal chaser for the HP 18. So seamless that it's hard to talk about it in such a confined space. BUY IT.

34.) CABO WABO Reposado 100% Agave Tequila (Mexico); 40% abv, $50.
Show me a better 100% agave tequila and I'll sit on an agave plant.

35.) WILD TURKEY "Tribute" Master Distiller Jimmy Russell's 50th Anniversary 15-Year-Old Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey (USA); 50.5% abv, $90.
A fitting cap on the stellar career of one of America's finest, most respected distilling legends, Jimmy Russell. A true gentleman deserves a fantastic whiskey as his swan song.

36.) BUSHMILLS 16-Year-Old Single Irish Malt Whiskey (Ireland); 40% abv, $65.
Recently named the best Irish malt whiskey of all for 2005 by Whisky Magazine. Couldn't agree more. A complete whiskey.

37.) CHARBAY Vodka (USA); 40% abv, $27.
Master distiller Miles Karakasevic's inspired talent and vision are what makes this unflavored vodka so delicious. It's Miles apart.

38.) COINTREAU Liqueur (France); 40% abv, $32.
Over the years of loving this classic orange liqueur and using it for countless margaritas, I forgot how savory it was on its own. A Retaste brought it up to where it should be, five stars.

39.) FLOR DE CANA Centenario Limited Edition Rum (Nicaragua); 40% abv, $60.
Will always be viewed by yours truly as one of the finest, purest examples of the rum distiller's art.
